Planting directions

Peony bare roots will ship to you in the fall because this is the ideal time to plant peonies.

You may see 3-5 swollen 'eyes' on each root, but they are in a dormant state and should not begin their active growth cycle until spring.

Do your best to get your new peonies planted upon arrival in a bed prepared with compost and a balanced granular fertilizer.  Plant them with the eyes facing upwards, and cover with no more than 1-2" of soil.

Each peony should be given approximately 3 feet of growing space.

If you can't plant you new peony roots immediately upon arrival, store them in the produce drawer in your refrigerator to keep them viable. Plant as soon as possible into a prepared bed.

Don't worry if you see cold temperatures or snow in the forecast before your bare roots arrive. As long as the ground is thawed and workable on planting day you can still plant your peonies.

You can mulch your peony planting area if desired, but in the spring, pull the mulch back in the area directly over the roots to give them some breathing room.
