25 seeds collected from Czarny Charakter dahlias.

These open pollinated dahlia seeds were harvested from Czarny Charakter dahlia flowers grown on our pesticide-free farm and nursery in Washington State.

In 2026, our Czarny Charakter plants were grown in a bed which only contained other fully double, dark colored dahlias. While we cannot control which flowers the bees visit, this strategic planting location was designed to help increase the number of dark colored and/or fully double flowers these seeds might produce.

What will dahlias grown from these seeds look like?

Dahlias grown from seed are always a unique combination of the genes from the parent plant and those of the plant whose pollen helped make the seed.

This means every dahlia grown from seeds is a surprise – A completely new dahlia never seen before!

If you want flowers that look exactly like the Czarny Charakter flowers shown above, please purchase tubers instead.

Planting directions for dahlia seeds

Dahlia seedlings are very sensitive to cold weather. For best results, start seeds indoors in moist growing medium, under a humidity dome with grow lights and a heating mat set to 65-70 degrees F (18-21 C).

Be patient with your seeds - sometimes they take up to a month to germinate even in ideal circumstances.

If they have not germinated after a month of staying in moist growing medium under a humidity dome and grow light, your heat mat may be set too high.

Try unplugging the heat mat. Or cycle the heat mat on for a couple hours and off for the rest of the day.

Plant young dahlia seedlings out into the garden once they have a minimum of two sets of true leaves (do not count the first leaves that emerged when they sprouted) and your overnight temperatures are consistently in the 40’s(F) or higher.

JJust like with any seedlings, be sure to harden them off before letting them live outside full time.

Young dahlias are especially susceptible to damage from slugs and bunnies!

Be sure to protect your baby dahlias from slugs by planted them inside slug collars or by using an organic product like Sluggo. Protect them from bunnies by covering them with netting.
